Pure Visibility is getting ready to launch videos on a couple of our client’s websites as well as our own site. I have a background in film, so I have fallen into the role of “video guy” and have the task of helping clients get their videos online. Even though I am a directed and produced many independent films, creating and posting website videos is a different challenge.
Some of the questions I encountered were: How should the content differ? Where should I host the video? Where should I place it on the website? How can I measure the effectiveness? We are just getting started in the world of video and I have not answered a lot of these questions, but I am starting with what I know about online advertising by starting with identifying goals.
The most important thing to start with when adding anything, including video, to your website is to determine a goal on which you can measure. You need to determine a goal because in order to measure whether your video is effective, there has to be some form of measurement.
At Pure Visibility we usually start with a conversion which is typically a purchase or lead generation (form submission) for most of our clients. This is usually a good starting point because if you already have an AdWords account up and running than you should already be tracking conversions.
The next step is to make sure you have your technology set up in such a way that you can track when a user who watched the video goes on to convert somewhere on your site. There are different ways of tracking this through Google Analytics including adding a script to your video that tracks as a pageview, but I would argue the easiest way is to host your video on YouTube or another video sharing site because they have some metrics built in.
There are a few more advantages to hosting your video on a video sharing site including syndication, load balancing, and search engine visibility. My advice for a beginner is to go to Tube Mogul to get started because TubeMogul will help you submit your video to multiple video sharing sites at once. The idea is, with your video hosted on multiple sites you increase the likelihood that people will find it. To further increase the visibility of your video make sure your video’s title and description are keyword rich and make sure you start your description with the url of your website. I imagine as time goes on I will have more tips that I can share but I thought this would be good to get anyone started.
