Know what they do, do well, praise them for it publicly in such a way that they know you mean it and that they are valued and appreciated. Variants of this work for customers, too -- letting them know that you remember who they are, care enough to learn something about what they do. I expect someone to mention hard work, but the kicker is that it has to be hard work you CARE about, for which you have passion. Not just hiring smart people, but nurturing and supporting them. Know what they do, do well, praise them for it publicly in such a way that they know you mean it and that they are valued and appreciated. You might think you're the world's greatest at everything, but until you work with somebody with decades of experience in a certain field, you'll realize how much you don't know.
